National Geographic Kingsley Blue Globe |
The substantial and handsome Kingsley floor globe combines up-to-date National Geographic cartography with the classic blue ocean color scheme of their best-selling maps. The globe is named for 19th-century explorer and science writer Mary Kingsley. Traveling unescorted through countries including Sierra Leone, Gabon, and Angola, she lived with native Africans in the British colonies and wrote about their lives and beliefs. Her 1897 volume Travels in West Africa was an instant best-seller, although her opposition to some of the British Empire's cultural and economic imperialism attracted criticism.
